Amado Chaves papers, 1698-1931.

Collection consists of correspondence, official appointments, personal papers, manuscript histories, genealogies, and clippings. Subjects are New Mexican customs and folklore (Dona Tules, Legend of Padre Juan de Padilla, Legend of La Lucera), the effect of foreigners on the people of New Mexico, land grants (including the Maxwell Land Grant), land titles, Stephen W. Kearny, Pancho Villa, Lucien B. Maxwell, and Fort Marcy (Santa Fe, N.M.). Noted correspondents are Charles F. Lummis, B.W. (Win) Page, Katharine Chaves Page, and Stephen B. Elkins. Also included are the Chaves and Ortiz family genealogies, Cuerno Verde's canto (handwritten copy), manuscript histories of the Pueblo Revolt (1680) and of the New Mexico school system, and a land grant map for La Majada (1698-1791).

Charles F. Lummis (1859-1928) was born in Lynn, Massachusettts. He became an editor for the Los Angeles Times on February 1, 1884, working for Harrison Gray Otis. He promoted interest in the American Southwest with his photography and articles. Lummis helped found the Southwest Museum in Los Angeles and the School of American Research in Santa Fe.
